Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday took an exception to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann skipping the civic reception organised here in honour of President of India Droupadi Murmu, saying that the Chief Minister must know his "constitutional obligation".
Speaking at the function organised at Punjab Raj Bhawan here, the Governor said the Chief Minister had confirmed that he would be attend the reception ceremony but chose to skip it for some compulsions.
"No matter how much work one has but I feel it is important to one's constitutional responsibility," the Governor asserted.
President Murmu is on her maiden visit to Chandigarh. The function was on Saturday attended by the Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal, Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya besides some Union and State ministers and several other dignitaries.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, while reacting to Purohit's statement, said, "it is very unfortunate on the part of governor for raising this political issue from the stage of the Governor house."
In a statement, Arora said Mann's event was scheduled and he had deputed him to receive and welcome President Droupadi Murmu during her visit in Chandigarh.
He said he along with five other cabinet ministers and all senior bureaucrats attended the event to celebrate the Air Force Day. "However, honorable Governor made this unfortunate remarks against the CM", said Arora while urging him to restrain from making such statements in the future.
The President was in Chandigarh to witness the air display of the Indian Air Force at Sukhna lake.
Notably, there had been a squabble between the Governor and AAP government over holding a session of the Punjab assembly.
The governor had withdrawn the permission to hold a special session on September 22 after seeking legal opinion when the AAP government wanted to bring a confidence motion only in the House.
After the AAP government decided to hold the session on September 27, the governor gave his nod only after the government provided the details of the legislative business.
Meanwhile, the Punjab BJP criticized Mann for skipping the function in Chandigarh.
Punjab BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma said it is very unfortunate that Mann skipped the event and told him to understand his constitutional responsibility.
