DW BUREAU / Chandigarh Punjab and Chandigarh Journalists' Union on Wednesday celebrated the National Press Day at Chandigarh. Governor of Punjab Banwarilal Purohit was the chief guest on the occassion and eminent Journalist P Sainath was the key speaker. While congratulating the Journalists' on the occassion, Purohit said that journalists played a great role during freedom struggle. He said that the journalist should always work to discover truth. He said that the journalists should play role in promoting nationalism. He also said that some international newspapers are portraying India in poor light. P Sainath said that the journalist's duty is to highlight the problems being faced by the people and it is the duty of the government to fix the problems. He said that the India has witnessed a great fall in Freedom of Press Index. At one point of tim, India ranked 94, now it is at bottom. He also highlighted the role of journalists during freedom movment. President of the union Balbir Singh Jandu highlighted the history of union and how they fought for the rights of th journalists in the past. (editor@dailyworld.in)
