Former ACS to Punjab CM A Venu Prasad appointed Technical Member (State) to the Principal Bench of the GST Tribunal

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved several high-level appointments to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Tribunal, bolstering its judicial and technical infrastructure ahead of the tribunal's long-awaited full-fledged operationalisation.
Shri Venugopal Prasad, IAS (Retd.), of the 1991 batch from the Punjab cadre, has been appointed as the Technical Member (State) to the Principal Bench of the GST Tribunal in New Delhi. His tenure will span four years from the date of assumption of charge or until he attains the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier.
Simultaneously, Shri Anil Kumar Gupta, IRS (Retd.), formerly of the Income Tax Department, has been appointed as the Technical Member (Centre) at the Principal Bench in New Delhi, for the same term conditions.
The Centre has also cleared the appointment of 23 retired and seving senior IRS officers to the posts of Technical Member (Centre) across various State Benches of the GST Appellate Tribunal. These appointments are also for a period of four years or until the age of 67, whichever comes first. The list of newly appointed technical members includes:

These appointments were formally issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India, on Monday. The formation of the GST Appellate Tribunal and its various benches is being seen as a crucial reform in India's indirect tax adjudication landscape, expected to significantly reduce litigation and streamline dispute resolution between taxpayers and tax authorities.
