The Punjab Medical Council in a major initiative here today felicitated the best graduate of the MBBS examination conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, by awarding the Dr Gurmej Singh Gill Memorial Gold Medal. Dr AS Sekhon, President of the Punjab Medical Council, presented the first medal to Dr Dhruvika Tiwari daughter of Dhirendera Kumar Tiwari, who stood first in the final profession MBBS examination held in November-December, 2019 by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot.
Dr Dhruvika Tiwari who has graduated from the Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, was presented the gold medal at an impressive function held at the Punjab Bhawan which was attended by family members of Dr Gurmej Singh Gill besides members of the Punjab Medical Council. Dr Sekhon speaking on the occasion said the Punjab Medical Council had instituted this gold medal will be awarded every year to the best graduate of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and Dr Gill's family had already given ten gold medals to be awarded in the successive years to come.
Dr Sekhon, paying rich tributes to Dr Gurmej Singh Gill, said Dr Gill was a dynamic personality in the medical profession who served the ailing patients with keen interest and professionalism. He was a senior member of the Punjab Medical Council. Born on November 15, 1953, Dr Gill passed MBBS degree from Government Medical College Amritsar in December 1975 and completed his MS (Surgery) from Government Medical College, Amritsar in 1988. He passed away on October 13, 2020 due to blood cancer.
The PMC president lauded the services of Dr Gill and said he served as Vice-President of the Punjab Medical Council and also as a member of the Medical Council of India. He was an active member of the ethical committee of the Punjab Medical Council and his opinion was actively sought by all his colleagues. He said this medal is 10 gm sterling silver in weight with gold plating and has been designed impressively. Dr Akash Deep Aggarwal, Registrar, Punjab Medical Council, has taken interest in planning and designing this medal. Dr Sekhon said the Punjab Medical Council is also planning to institute other medals sponsored by various doctors which will be awarded to the toppers subject wise in final Prof examination of MBBS.
