DW BUREAU / Chandigarh AAP Chandigarh has demanded that adequate parking spaces should be provided to auto rickshaws in every sector of the city, where these autos can wait for their customers. Prem Garg, Convenor AAP in a communication to Adviser Manoj Parida had said that there are about 25000 autos in the tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali, out of which 7500 are registered in Chandigarh. He said that in the absence of any parking spaces earmarked for autos, these drivers are facing a lot of inconvenience to park their vehicles anywhere in the city. If they park on the road or in no parking areas, they are issued challans for wrong parking. He urged that therefore, they be allowed to park their autos in the parking lots at night, as these parking lots are empty at night. The administration should also earmark some spaces in every sector for parking of some autos, so that they can legally park, while waiting for the customers and not left at mercy of policemen. For these they can be charged some nominal monthly parking charges also. Garg also said that though it's mandatory for all autos to install fare meters in the city but Chandigarh administration has not notified or revised the fare rates to be charged, since the year 2009. Therefore, a fresh fare chart needs to be notified, after taking care of various cost factors in prices Of CNG/fuel etc. He said that autos aren't allowed free movement in the tricity. Those registered in Mohali are required to make payments of fees for entering Chandigarh or Panchkula and vice versa. It is not only a harassment to these poor people but also a source of corruption and malpractices etc, he said. Therefore, some mechanism needs to be worked out where autos registered anywhere in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali are allowed to move freely in the tricity, he added. (editor@dailyworld.in)
