DW Bureau | Chandigarh, September 24: Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has approved the creation of 110 new Junior Resident (JR) posts at Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), SAS Nagar (Mohali), taking the total sanctioned strength from 97 to 207.

According to the state government, the approval follows the expansion of postgraduate medical courses at the institute. The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences have granted affiliation/approval across 24 departments, taking the annual postgraduate intake at AIMS Mohali to 69 seats.

Cheema said the institute's requirement for Junior Residents has been projected at 147 for the 2026-27 academic session, 177 for 2027-28 and 207 for 2028-29, based on the three-year postgraduate training cycle.

The institute currently has 97 sanctioned JR posts. The government said the existing resident strength of 114 over the three-year cycle was based on an annual intake of 38 academic residents.

Cheema said the additional posts were approved to meet the requirement for the current academic session. Seven regular/post-diploma Junior Residents are also scheduled to complete their tenure and be relieved during the session, including six in October and one in December 2026.

The Department of Medical Education and Research had submitted the proposal for creation of the posts, the government said.
