Retirement is no longer a static phase of life; it’s an evolving opportunity to live meaningfully, stay connected, and pursue passions. Where you choose to retire plays a central role in shaping this next chapter. It impacts your lifestyle, health, happiness, and sense of belonging. And like all important life decisions, this one needs forethought.
This article builds on our earlier explorations of social well-being, from nurturing spousal bonds to cultivating relationships with children, friends, and community groups. Choosing where to retire is not just a logistical step; it is the geographic anchor that makes all those social relationships possible.
Start Planning Five Years in Advance
The decision about where to retire should ideally begin at least five years before your retirement date. This gives you time to explore options, rent before you buy, and begin building relationships in the new place. A rushed decision often leads to misalignment between expectations and reality.
Why Location Matters
Unlike earlier generations that mostly retired to their ancestral towns or stayed put, today’s retirees are mobile and aspirational. But what defines a great retirement city?
The Right Retirement Destination: Factors to Consider
Proximity to Family and Friends: The most frequently cited source of happiness in retirement is being near loved ones. Being close to your children, siblings, or old friends adds emotional richness and logistical comfort.
Medical Infrastructure: Retirement inevitably brings greater focus on healthcare. Access to good hospitals, diagnostics, specialists, and emergency care becomes a critical factor.
Connectivity: Easy access to airports, trains, and highways ensures continued mobility for leisure, emergencies, or part-time work.
Social and Hobby Circles: Look for places that enable the pursuit of your interests—whether it is music, literature, golf, trekking, or spiritual groups.
Opportunities for a Second Career: Many retirees are younger, healthier, and eager to keep working, on their terms. Consulting, mentoring, or voluntary work can add purpose.
Cost of Living and Housing: Affordability ensures financial peace in retirement.
Climate and Pollution: Favourable weather, clean air, and walkable surroundings matter deeply for physical and mental well-being.
The PLACE Index: A Simple Model
We suggest an easy-to-remember framework called the PLACE Index:
- People (family/friends nearby, cultural affinity)
- Livelihood (consulting, volunteering, light work options)
Access (connectivity, healthcare, safety)
- Community (hobby groups, social circles, like-minded residents)
- Environment (clean air, green cover, pleasant weather)
Score each shortlisted city on these five parameters to get a clearer picture of your best-fit retirement city.
Hometowns, Metro Suburbs, and Top Picks
Many retirees are returning to their hometowns for familiarity, emotional roots, and reuniting with childhood friends. Others are choosing metro-adjacent towns like Gurgaon, Pune, Navi Mumbai, or Noida for proximity to where their children live.
According to reports by Anarock and Times Property (2024), cities drawing the most interest from retirees include Chandigarh, Pune, Coimbatore, Mysuru, Dehradun, peripheral Bengaluru, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Jaipur. Each offers a mix of health care, climate, community, and access to leisure.
Case Study: Choosing Chandigarh
In my case, choosing Chandigarh was driven by many of the PLACE parameters. My wife’s elder sister and her husband—who retired as an Air Marshal—jointly decided with us to retire in Chandigarh, and we now live in the same tower. My wife’s cousin, a doctor, also chose this city to settle with his wife and children after returning from the US to enjoy a better pace of life; they too live in the same tower.
My cousin, a gynaecologist, and her husband, an orthopaedic surgeon, relocated from the UK to set up their hospital here. My younger brother, who is set to retire from the Indian Air Force in a few years, has also chosen to settle nearby.
Living close to extended family in separate homes gives us the best of both worlds—the warmth, support, and spontaneity of a joint family, alongside the privacy and autonomy of independent living.
Chandigarh is also close to my hometown, Jalandhar, which offers an emotional connection and ease of travel for family occasions. I had worked in Chandigarh from 2001 to 2005 and built strong personal and professional networks. Even after moving away, I kept visiting frequently for business, reunions, and family gatherings. In 2017, after deep thought and repeated visits, I decided to invest in my retirement home here and moved in 2023.
Today, many of us live in the same tower—on different floors—or nearby. Our tower has over 40 families from diverse professional backgrounds and is gradually evolving into a familial community. The availability of excellent healthcare, green spaces, air connectivity, and nearby hill retreats sealed my decision.
Conclusion: Begin Early, Choose Mindfully
Selecting the right retirement city isn’t just about where you live, but how you live. It’s about access, belonging, identity, and daily joy. Think of it not as a logistical decision, but a life-shaping one. Begin five years before your retirement, use the PLACE index to evaluate, and trust your instinct—because in the end, home is not just a place, it’s a feeling.
