DW BUREAU / PATIALA In most of the parts of Patiala city where the problem of accumulation of storm water had been persisting for years despite heavy rains today there was no area inundated with storm water and within an hour or two of the rain stopping the rain water got drained from these places. To assess the drainage of rain water, Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit and Municipal Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur visited Sheran Wala Gate, Anardana Chowk, Old Tractor Market, Karah wala Chowk, Ragho Majra, Old Sabzi Mandi, Government Mahindra College and STP during heavy rains. Talking about the STP, Mayor of Municipal Corporation Sanjeev Sharma Bittu said that water was being drained out at full capacity through 600 km long sewerage line and STP in Patiala city due to which, the water did not get accumulated even during the heavy rain in these areas which has been facing the flood like situation during rainy season since decades. There was also a risk of spreading of diseases in these areas during the rainy season which has now been largely resolved. He said that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Lok Sabha Member Preneet Kaur were keen to resolve the problems of the city and the Municipal Corporation was also working round the clock for the purpose. Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit said that the Municipal Corporation had made elaborate arrangements for the drainage of rain water in view of the rainy season. He said that Sheran Wala Gate, Anardana Chowk, Modi College, Ragho Majra, Karah Wala Chowk, Purani Sabzi Mandi, Samania Gate, Mahindra College, where, there was a major problem of drainage after rains earlier. Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur said that non-use of polythene bags has reduced the problem of blockage of sewerage, due to which rain water is now emptied in a short time through the sewerage line. She said that the teams of the Municipal Corporation had worked in coordination with each other to make arrangements for the drainage of rain water, as a result of which even the low lying areas of Patiala city were not flooded during heavy rain today.
