Washington, Nov 21 : Hours before his planned meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, US President Donald Trump said he believed that he and Mamdani â??will get along fine.â??

In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Trump noted that though Mamdani has a â??different philosophy,â?? both of them want to â??make New York strong.â??

â??He's got a different philosophy. He's a little bit different. I give him a lot of credit for the run. He did a successful run, and we all know that runs are not easy, but I think we'll get along fine. Look, we're looking for the same thing. We want to make New York strong,â?? he added.

Trump also reacted to Mamdaniâ??s victory speech, which referenced the president directly, telling him to â??turn the volume upâ?? on the television.

â??So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,â?? Mamdani had said.

Trump acknowledged that he was also targeting Mamdani â??a little too hard.â??

â??It wasâ?¦hard to be totally friendly toward the opponentâ?¦he had some interesting opponents, but he ran a good race. I don't know exactly what he means by turn the volume upâ?¦He has to be careful what he says to meâ?¦he was very nice in callingâ?¦and we're gonna have a meetingâ?¦I think it's going to be quite civil,â?? he added.

On Thursday, the White House targeted Mamdani, saying a â??communistâ?? is coming to meet President Trump.

Responding to questions about the meeting, the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked, â??It speaks volumes that tomorrow we have a communist coming to the White House, because that's who the Democrat party elected as the mayor of the largest city in the country, referring to Mamdani, and said the president is â??willing to meet with anyone and talk to anyone to try to do whatâ??s right on behalf of the American people.â??

Trump had announced the meeting in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, calling Mamdani the â??Communist Mayor of New York Cityâ?? and stating that the mayor-elect had requested the Oval Office meeting. â??We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st.â??

Mamdani also held a briefing in New York on Thursday, telling reporters he intends to outline priorities for the city and seek areas of agreement with the president. â??Iâ??m not concerned about this meeting,â?? he said. â??I view this meeting as an opportunity to make my case,â?? adding that it â??behoves me to leave no stone unturned in making the city more affordable.â??

The mayor-elect said he plans to raise issues including public safety, affordability and economic stability during the Oval Office discussion.

The meeting comes after months of confrontations during the New York mayoral election campaign. Trump repeatedly labelled Mamdani a â??communist,â?? predicted economic and social decline under his leadership, and threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won.

In an unusual step, Trump endorsed Mamdaniâ??s rival, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. Mamdani defeated Cuomo by nearly nine percentage points in the November 4 election, becoming the first Democratic socialist elected mayor of the countryâ??s largest city.
