Dalit organizations burn flag of Shiv Sena, block traffic at company bagh chowk

More than four hundred activists of Dalit organizations, including Punjab Safai Karamchari Union and Punjab Safai Karamchari Federation, on Tuesday held a protest demonstration against the highhandedness of Shiv Sena activists at Phagwara following which Phagwara remained tense for three days continuously besides stalling internet services in Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahar and Jalandhar districts.

The dalit activists staged a dharna at the company bagh chowk and burnt effigies of the Union government and raised anti-government and anti-Modi slogans over the issue of SC/ST Act. The bazars of the city especially the Jyoti Chowk and old GT road shops remained closed during the protest. The police itself closed the road from Jyoti Chowk to company bagh chowk to avert any kind of untoward incidents.

Besides heavy contingents of the Punjab police and para military forces were also deployed to maintain law and order situation in the city. The agitation passed off peacefully causing a great

relief to the civil and police administration.
