Central Scientific Instruments Organisation celebrated “National Science Day” on Wednesday by holding an Open Day and organizing National Science Day Lecture besides other activities like National Science Day Quiz etc. All the labs of CSIO were kept open for general public in the forenoon. Around 5000 visitors including students from various schools, colleges, universities and general public went around the laboratories of the institute.
They interacted with the scientists and were given exposure to the technologies available & being pursued at CSIO.
Later in the afternoon Prof. Ajoy Ghatak, Professor M. N. Saha Fellow, NASI & Formerly Professor of Physics, IIT Delhi delivered the National Science Day lecture on the topic “Raman Effect & A Brief History of Development of Science in India”. He said that Raman Effect (for which Professor CV Raman was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics) was discovered exactly 90 years back on February 28, 1928.
That is why every year on 28th February National Science Day is celebrated.
In this talk he discussed basic physics of Raman Effect and also give a brief history of development of science in India. Prof. Ghatak has been a legendary teacher for generations of students in the area of optics and photonics. He said that before the talk he had visited various laboratories in CSIO and there is a marked improvement in the infrastructure and R&D activities in CSIO.
