Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for Gurdaspur by-elections Swaran Singh Salaria on Friday asked Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Badal to prove charges or apologise otherwise be ready to face defamation case.
Badal had alleged that a woman had lodged a complaint against Salaria alleging rape, cheating and threatening in Mumbai in 2014 however police had filed charge sheet against Salaria under section 506 (threatening) of IPC. Also, a Congress delegation met Chief Election Officer yesterday and demanded disqualification of Salaria as he had concealed the information regarding case while filing nominations.
Refuting allegations, Salaria said Badal was a responsible politician and a part of government, he should prove charges or should apologise otherwise be ready to face defamation case.
Salaria alleged that the Congress came to power because of fake promises and the party has realised that it was not going to win bye-elections that is why it has started personal attacks.
He asked Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar that he should tell why his brother committed suicide?
Salaria claimed that the complaint of woman, which was being used for his character assassination, was dismissed by police after investigation of six monthss. The case was filed only on the charge of IPC section 506. He said that he had appealed in Bombay High Court to dismiss the case.
He claimed that in past three years the complainant was present in court only once and had not filed her reply.
Salaria also claimed that viral photos on social media sites were fake and added that he belonged to a family of freedom fighters and he could not do anything like this.
