The Department of English organized its inaugural Annual Balraj Sahni Memorial Lecture on Wednesday. The Lecture is dedicated to the memory of writer, actor and social activist Balraj Sahni who remained deeply-rooted to Punjab till he breathed his last.

The distinguished Speaker for the event was Madan Gopal Singh, film theorist, screen writer, lyricist, composer and singer. The Lecture was chaired by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Arvind.

In his inaugural remarks, Professor Arvind congratulated the Department for instituting this Lecture and said that Madan Gopal Singh was the perfect choice for the same.

While welcoming the guests and introducing the Speaker, Dr Jyoti Puri, Head, Department of English, said that it is an honour for the Department to host such a versatile personality as Madan Gopal Singh. Enthralling the audience with his mesmerising delivery, Madan Gopal Singh started by unweaving the latent layers of the title 'Shades of Desire.' He emphasised that it is important to familiarise oneself with the complex confluence of different cultural traditions in nineteenth century South Asia to truly appreciate the singular greatness of Balraj Sahni. His personality, Singh reiterated, exuded tempting restless "for the romance of knowing and seeking". Dr Rajesh Kumar Sharma, Dean Languages and Professor of English, in his special remarks, stated that Madan Gopal Singh's thought invariably flows like a musical composition.
