Mohali Police on Friday arrested a man whohad duped at least a dozen people of several lakh rupees while impersonating as a minister and promising to get them government jobs.
Parminder Singh Toor, who originally hails from Fatehabad in Haryana and was staying in Dera Bassi, was arrested along with six other accomplices.
The other arrested include Gurmeet Singh, Aadsach Singh, Balwinder Singh, Varinder Singh, Parminder Singh and driver Bunty, police said.
The police have impounded Toor’s high-end Range Rover SUV and also seized a .32 bore revolver, 10 live cartridges, Rs 4 lakh in cash, five mobile phones and some forged papers, including cheque books from his possession.
A Mahindra Scorpio SUV with a beacon, which the accused used as a “pilot car”, has also been seized.
Toor, who had been living here for the last couple of years, would introduce himself as a government official to unwitting people. He moved around in the Range Rover and had also hired security guards which used to accompany him in the Scorpio. An investigating officer said they received information that the accused had been promising people in the city on the pretext of providing them jobs.
The accused would claim to know some big-wigs in the government who would get their work done and provide them jobs in various departments. The police said the accused were produced in a local court, which sent them to judicial
custody. The cops have also launched a combing operation to nab the other members of the gang.
