The Municipal Corporation Ludhiana is going to execute the energy efficient LED street lights project in the smart city as the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC) has given permission to the department to move ahead with the project. Though the PMIDC has finalised the company Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for the project but it has also directed the MCL to first check the working of the company before signing MOU and moving ahead with the project.

It is pertinent to mention here that LED street lights project was proposed in 2008 to replace the existing street lights with the energy efficient lights. There are total 1.05 lakh street lights points in the entire city and MCL is paying above RS 30 crores per annum to Power department in the form of bills. Where on one hand it would help the MCL to reduce the electricity bill amount it would also prove beneficial for the commuters on the road with better lightning.

The PMIDC has asked the MCL Commissioner to study scope of smart street lightning project included in the smart city project approved by the Government of India and should ensure that there is no duplicity in funding and its management before proceeding with EESL.

The officials informed that PMIDC has also directed them to first get the project approved from the MC General House based on the structure and terms and conditions of the EESL model. The MCL officials would sign MOU with the company EESL for the entire city but before that they would have to execute the project in one ward as pilot project and after seeing the results it should be replicated in other wards of the city.

While giving the details of the project the MCL Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said, ÔÇ£It is a much awaited project for the city and finally PMIDC has given the permission to MCL to execute the project which is a good news for the residents also.ÔÇØ He said that PMIDC has also asked the MCL to appoint a professional who should have the experience of street lightning because as of now civil engineers are handling this branch.
