Chandigarh: Thousands of runners from across India and abroad descended on the City Beautiful on Sunday to participate in the 2nd Edition of the International level Daily World Marathon which was organised in association with the Chandigarh Administration, making the event a grand success.
The participants exuded enthusiasm and displayed true sportsman spirit as they started assembling at the Capitol Complex even before 5 am much before daybreak. The passion of these spirited runners had to be seen to be believed.
The Governor of Punjab and Chandigarh’s Administrator, VP Singh Badnore flagged off the last run – a five km one – along with Punjab DGP Suresh Arora, Chief Information Commissioner SS Channy, Principal Secretary to Punjab CM Tejveer Singh, UT Home Secretary Anurag Aggarwal and Secretary to Punjab Governor JM Balamurugan, besides several top IAS and IPS officers of Punjab, Haryana and UT Chandigarh.
The first three runs – 42-km of full marathon, 21-km of half marathon and 10-km run were earlier flagged off at 5 am, 6 am and 6.30 am respectively from the Capitol Complex to the Sukhna Lake. The Governor lauded the efforts of the UT Administration and Daily World in organising the mega event. He made an impassioned plea to such events an annual feature and said that the administration would extend full support to such events.
Laljee Yadav from the Indian Army won the first prize in the male category by completing the race in 2:25:57 hours, while Seema bagged the first prize in the female category of the 42-km run by completing the run run in 3:05:49 hours. In the 21-km run, Semir Naser from Ethiopia won the first prize in the male category whereas Varsha Devi got the first prize in the female category. In 10 kilometre run, Pradeep Kumar bagged the first prize in the male category.
It was still dark when the runners daring to run the full marathon of 42 kms and half marathon of 21 kms broke into a healthy trot after being flagged off. There were over four hundred runners from the Indian Army and the Punjab police also participated in the chip-timed runs adding tremendous value to the whole event.
“Today was a historic day for the City Beautiful. We got full support from the UT Administration, especially its Home Secretary Anurag Aggarwal. We also thank all our partners in helping us make this run such a grand success,” said Daily World Chief Executive Officer HS Gujral.
In fact, it was for the first time in Chandigarh that these runners were wearing special bibs made out of paper that cannot be torn and which had an electronic chip timer attached to it.
Among others who were present and participated in the run, included, former Punjab Chief Secretary and DG (MAGSIPA) Sarvesh Kaushal, Punjab’s Additional Chief Secretary (Excise and Taxation) MP Singh, Financial Commissioner (Development) Viswajeet Khanna, Punjab’s ACS (Higher Education) SK Sandhu, DGP (Law and Order) Hardeep Singh Dhillon, Principal Secretary (Local Bodies) A Venu Prasad, Punjab’s Vigilance Chief BK Uppal, Punjab’s ADGPs Sanjiv Kalra, ADGP (PAP) Kuldip Singh, Punjab’s ADGP (Intelligence) Varinder Kumar, Chandigarh’s Finance Secretary Ajoy Kumar Sinha, senior IAS officers Hussan Lal and D K Tiwari, IGPs Gurinder Dhillon and SK Singh, Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal, Chandigarh’s ADC Rajiv Gupta, Lovely Professional University Chancellor Ashok Mittal and DLF North head Rakesh Kerwell, Dean, Students Welfare Chandigarh University Dr A S Kang and President of Omaxe Ltd Bhupendra Singh.
People from all walks of life, including bankers, lawyers, journalists, and educationists also participated in the run.
