Chandigarh: A day after the Punjab Government banned the Shiromani Akali Dal’s Pol Khol rally that was scheduled to be organised on Sunday at Faridkot, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday allowed permission to the party to hold the rally. The High Court held a special hearing on a plea filed by the Akali Dal’s lawyers.
Welcoming the High Court’s decision, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said that it was a slap on the face of the government and that the decision was in favour of democracy, fundamental rights and civil liberties.
It may be mentioned that citing inputs regarding possible violence and threat to the life of top Akali leaders in Faridkot, the state Government had on Friday banned the Shiromani Akali Dal’s Pol Khol Rally in Faridkot on Sunday. A top police officer had informed Daily World that there are strong inputs regarding the hardliners planning to attack some important leaders of the Akali Dal and also resort to violence. The State Police is seized of the matter and the concerned leaders have been briefed about the probable threats accordingly, he said.
However, the Akali leaders had denounced the decision of the State Government and decided to move the High Court, challenging the government’s decision.
